Don't mess with Texas: Moonscape vistas in the center of the state; Austin’s vibrant hipster
(whatever that means now) culture; big sunsets; the massive (hundreds . . .
thousands? of individual windmills) wind farms south of Abilene; the pervasive,
rank smell of oil and nat gas between Abilene and Lubbock; driving through
the tiny hamlet (Winters, TX, above) where Rogers Hornsby was born, the abandoned sharecropper house
right out of Days of Heaven or The Last Picture Show; the high school football
stadium visible from the interstate right out of Friday Night Lights; almost all hotel rooms in Lubbock, gone (woman at Hampton Inn saying they’re always
sold out Tuesday through Thursday with people traveling -- no major convention or “happening” in town).
